Bay of Islands on "Bare Essentials"

Bare Essentials, Robinson 55.
Regular Xena crewmates Iris and Grant Bartlett have been down home in New Zealand racing on Bare Essentials, a Robinson-55 designed for the 2-handed Melbourne-Osaka race about 20 years ago. They send some reports and piccies, which I post with permission:

There's a video of Bare Essentials here, showing the down below, just below the '09 race to Noumea. She's a "submarine" he says...
From Grant:
Have just arrived home after delivering "Bare Essentials" down the coast to Marsden Cove, Whangarei where she is berthed.
"Cadillac" will be sulking that I raced on another yacht , but just wasn't back early enough to get her ready properly this time
We had a great week on "Bare Essentials" taking line honours every race.
Then winning the annual Bay of Islands to Whangaroa race (next harbour up the coast) which is held the day after race week. So Owner and crew all happy.
"Bare Essentials" very fast, my top speed when we won the NZ to Vanuatu race 28.3 knts.
But no creature comforts,we put up with that for the love of the speed. [PF: see the vid! There's room for 2 below, that's it!]

She's for sale, apparently...

Iris shows off her Bare Essentials
From Iris:

Grants been away over a week now on a delivery..but expect him back anytime.
On his return..down to bring "Bare Essentials" up the coast for the "Clash of the Cove."
We race a sprint from here 3rd March down the Coast to Marsden Cove Whangarei .. 60nmiles.. followed by their annual Regatta.
Peter please add whichever piccies you wish for "Xena's" Blog.
Was Fun to see Bikky at B.O.I. Regatta..American crew he raced with "Simply Red" .. gals! adored having him onboard..noticed they won a 2nd maybe 1st? [PF: first, good one Bicky!]
You will see pictures of us all.. Bay of Islands Race Week 2012 in Photos of "People" at beach party on Roberton Island..Bikky wore "Xena" tee shirt.
Weather for B.O.I. regatta and 40nmile race up the coast to Whangaroa day after .. organised by Waitangi Yacht Club.. was "great sailing conditions"
Every day 'twas bacon&egg pie 13x9" dish..club sandwiches..homemade chocolate cookies..banana cake & fruit which I organised for 6 all up..chilled Heinekens way home aaaarrrgghhh life and sailing bliss..........
Grant has liked this boat "Bare Essentials" for sometime. Owner asking $260,000.
Since our return from Kings Cup..we have 1 only TP52 in the Bay "Kia Kaha" means.. Be Strong.
I'll add 1 or 2 pics of "B E"..I enjoyed rac'n on her too..she goes like a rocket .. simple set up for sails and trim .. with 12ft keel doesn't  require lotz weight..although we stacked in-between tacks.
My Dears  TTFN ..Take Care
Lots of Love   Iris and the Animals xo

  1. Will forward with this email 2 more photos of "Bare Essential's" taken as we crossed the finish line in the recent Bay of Islands to Whangaroa race.
She's a real wet tip truck, but fast.
